Syracuse
Syracuse, a gem set on the south-eastern coast of Sicily, is today one of the island’s main cities and in the past was the chief city of Magna Graecia. Beauty, fascination and majesty endure in its historical, architectural and landscape heritage, and in 2005 it was placed on the list of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites together with the rocky Necropolis of Pantalica. Its Baroque Cathedral, decorated with exquisite frescoes, rises on the highest point of the square of the same name, and is followed in order of importance by the Church of Santa Lucia al Sepolcro and that of Santa Lucia alla Badia, which hosts Caravaggio’s painting of the “Burial of Santa Lucia”. The Doric temple dedicated to Apollo, possibly the earliest in ancient Sicily, and the Greek Theatre of Syracuse, the largest in all Magna Graecia, the ancient Roman Amphitheatre, and its charming Palaces such as that of Vermexio and Beneventano del Bosco dating from the 15th century, are just some of the fascinating monuments of this city which preserves some of the most precious historic and art heritage to be found in Sicily.

When to visit Syracuse
With its mild temperate climate year round, if you’re looking for a seaside holiday, there is no better period than June to September, with more crowded periods in July and August. Apart from the colder months between January and February, the rest of the year is excellent for exploring and trekking.
